In July 2007, I left the newsroom for the open road. After five years working as a journalist in Cape Town, I decided it was time to do the next thing and for me, the next thing was travelling. So I came to the UK on a working holiday.
In September last year I started working as a live-in personal care assistant to people who have suffered a spinal cord injury.
I also volunteer with The Back-Up Trust, a charity that works with people who are spinally injured. This picture was taken on the Back-Up Multi-Activity Course in Exmoor, North Devon in September 2008. We did a coastal push along some steep, rocky and muddy terrain on the moors.
The past year and a bit has been a life-changing experience. In December, I go home to Cape Town, and I felt I needed to document my experiences in some way. I guess in some ways, so I always have a tangible reminder of where I've been, what I've done, seen and learnt. And also as a chance to look back on my time here.
